That world needs to be turned upside down – Art Katz

To turn the world upside down is to upset its apple-cart, its wrong values, its false wisdom that has its origin from below, rather than above. Do we understand that the Church is set in a drama of a great cosmic proportion? That there are two wisdoms, two value systems, two mentalities, vying for rulership, for prevalence, to prevail in the world? The wisdom of God and the wisdom of the powers of this present world are in contention. And it seems like the world has ‘all the marbles’ by having everything that’s impressive: credentials, wealth, prosperity, affluence, and style! When I read the airplane magazine coming in yesterday, whew! My God! You need extraordinary inner resources, a deep commitment and consecration to God not to be seduced! What a remarkable subtlety and power in the advertisements and articles! It sets forth a whole lifestyle, a whole mentality, which I suspect has permeated Singapore through and through! It is all pleasure and excitement Sky-diving! Bungee jumping! Looking for thrills! Is that what life is about? Are we so bored that we have to manufacture thrills like jumping out of an airplane and float for a certain amount of time, before pulling the cord, or leap with something attached to us and just narrowly be saved from splattering on the ground? Is that sanity?!

That world needs to be turned upside down. It's a false and deluded world! It's a pleasure-oriented escape from reality, and it does not even so much as hint that there is an eternity to pay! Everything is centered in this present life, as if this present life is what life is all about, rather than seeing this present life as preparation for that which is to come, which is eternal. In what we call the Dark Ages, or the medieval time, there was a mentality of a necessary suffering in this life. This life was never seen as a pleasure trip, and we ‘moderns’ have dismissed the mentality of the "dark ages" when, in fact, they were more biblical than our present understanding. Is the world too much with you? Are you caught up with the things of Singapore? We took a ride last night, after the meeting, and the city is very impressive! We're even thinking about our "world headquarters," not so much in the Philippines, as Singapore! It is so lustrous and inviting, but equally seductive and deceptive. Can you see through the outer veneer and the false values that are celebrated?
